Is Hiroshima worth the visit? Hiroshima Travel Guide

August 6, 1945. That fateful day

So back in 2023, we visited Hiroshima, Japan. But before embarking on this journey, I did a lot of research. Some of my worries were

“Is there still radiation?”
“Is it safe to go to Hiroshima?”
“Will the kids appreciate the visit there?”

But I was convinced that Hiroshima is finally safe from radiation, and I really wanted my kids to learn about the historical first atomic bombing on Earth.

So, when we arrived in Hiroshima, there was a melancholic and nostalgic vibe. You can’t hear it, but you can feel that the place has been through a lot. The Hiroshima locals are so kind. Trams are still running around the city. The streets are buzzing with left and right shopping. Everything is normal.

Did you know that there seemed to be a stigma attached to them because of the radiation after the Hiroshima Bombing? NO ONE WANTED TO GO TO HIROSHIMA back then, especially during the first few years after the “Little Boy” was dropped. No one wanted to have a Hiroshima local wife for a while.

For the longest time, there was the growing fear that the radiation might still have an effect, so many foreigners and even locals from other Japanese prefectures didn’t want to visit. The background check is strict if an individual is from Hiroshima. Imagine you lost relatives and friends, and then you were still shunned. For 30 years, they endured it.

When you visit Hiroshima, don’t skip the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. When we went there, there were some school field trips from other parts of Japan. Upon entering the museum, they were crying. The feeling was overwhelming. It was like we were mourning again; no one was talking. All you could hear was sobbing. The atmosphere was so intense.

What you’ll see inside the Museum are the debris, burnt clothes, and horrific photos of the victims.
